Ballet gives a structured starting point, with proper technique, set vocabulary, and a clear sense of progression through levels. It suits kids who like having a defined skill to master. Freestyle, hip-hop, or jazz classes tend to be looser and more expressive, better suited to kids who want to move to music they already like rather than follow a strict form. Some schools offer both side by side, which lets a child try one and switch if it's not clicking.
Solo studio or multi-arts school?
A handful of schools in Chiang Mai teach dance alongside music, offering ballet, hip-hop or jazz in the same building as piano or guitar lessons. That can be convenient if you're already looking for music lessons too, or if your child hasn't settled on one interest yet. Dedicated dance studios, on the other hand, usually go deeper into technique and offer more structured levels or exam pathways for kids who already know dance is their thing.
Recitals and performance opportunities
Many dance schools build toward a public performance, whether a term-end recital, a showcase, or a competition piece. If performing matters to your child (or if you'd rather avoid the pressure of a stage), it's worth asking upfront how often a school puts on performances and whether participation is optional.
Age and class size
Younger kids (roughly 3-6) generally do better in smaller, more playful classes focused on basic movement and rhythm rather than formal technique. From around 7 up, most schools introduce structured levels and can accommodate a wider range of styles. Class size varies a lot between schools. A smaller group usually means more individual correction, which matters more as technique gets more demanding.
