What actually varies between clubs
Not every football program is built the same way, and the differences matter more than the marketing photos suggest.
Age structure. Some academies run strict age bands (under-6, under-9, under-12), others mix kids by skill rather than age. If your child is young and just starting out, a strict age band usually means gentler drills and less pressure to keep up with bigger kids.
Coach-to-player ratio. A session with 25 kids and one coach looks very different from one with 25 kids and four coaches. Ask directly. It's a fair question and any decent academy will answer it without hesitating.
Focus: fun vs. competition. Some clubs are explicitly about grassroots fun, with no league play, no elimination, just movement and basic skills. Others feed into actual leagues and select teams by trial. Neither is "better," but they're very different experiences for a 7-year-old.
Language. A few academies run bilingual or English-first sessions, which matters if your child is more comfortable in English than Thai, especially for the first few months.
What age should kids start?
Most academies in Chiang Mai open programs from around age 4-5 for very basic motor-skill football (dribbling, simple passing, no real matches), with structured team play usually starting around age 7-8. If your child is younger than that, look for a program that markets itself around "fundamentals" rather than "training." The vocabulary usually signals the actual intensity level.
Trial sessions are worth asking for
Most clubs will let a new family sit in on a session or bring their kid for a one-off trial before committing to a term. It's the fastest way to tell if the coaching style and group energy actually suit your kid. A lot gets lost in a written description that becomes obvious in twenty minutes on the pitch.
